Athol Paton was the brother of world renown schoolmaster, author and political activist, Alan Paton. Athol was killed at El Bura Haja, a settlement near El Wak in Italian Somalia, on the 16th of December 1940. Athol was the Natal Carbineers' first casualty of the Second World War.

Alan and Athol had a rather turbulent relationship; partly due to the fact that Athol, although younger than Alan, was far more athletic than his brother. Athol played rugby for College's first fifteen and was an active Old Boy.
